How I Paint - Chaos Daemons - Plaguebearers of Nurgle

Of all the Powers of Chaos, the daemons of Nurgle are my favourite. I have a large daemon army, and love the juxtaposition of the gregarious, jovial nature of these daemons with their horrific despair inducing appearance. As with all daemons there is a colour palete, in the case of Nurgle this is greens and browns. i have been using this scheme for many years and have amassed a large force of Plaguebearers.

Paints Used:

  • Chaos Black Spray
  • Zandri Dust
  • Cassandora Yellow
  • Reikland Fleshshade
  • Ushabti Bone
  • Lahmian Medium
  • Athonian Camoshade
  • Biel-Tan Green
  • Druchii Violet
  • Ogryn Camo
  • Screamer Pink
  • Pink Horror
  • Blood Angels Red
  • Red Wash (Army Painter)
  • Averland Sunset
  • Yriel Yellow
  • Abaddon Black
  • Agrax EarthShade
  • Karak Stone
  • Screaming Skull
  • Pallid Wych Flesh
  • Leadbelcher
  • Nuln Oil
  • Skrag Brown
  • Trollslayer Orange
  • Fire Dragon Orange

I began by undercoating the miniature with Chaos Black spray.

The flesh

I then gave the whole miniature a basecoat of Zandri Dust. I made sure that the basecoat is solid and not patchy by applying multiple thin coats.

I then gave the flesh a wash with Cassandora Yellow. This was left to thoroughly dry.

The flesh was then given a second wash with Reikland Fleshshade.

Once both washes had dried, I began highlighting the flesh with Ushabti Bone, which was heavily thinned with Lahmian Medium. This stage took some time as the highlights were layered onto the flesh.

With flesh highlighted, I then applied a glaze to the flesh. For the glaze, I used a combination of Athonian Camoshade, Biel-Tan Green and Druchii Violet all heavily thinned with Lahmian Medium.  For most of the glaze, I used a green tone (either Athonian Camoshade and/or Biel-Tan Green) with small patches of purple to indicate bruising.

Once the glaze was thoroughly dry, the flesh was highlighted for a second time, using thinned (with Lahmian Medium) Ogryn Camo.

Adding detail to the flesh

The exposed organs and the inside of the mouth were all painted with Screamer Pink.

Once dry, the Screamer Pink was washed with Druchii Violet

The Screamer Pink was then highlighted with a 1:1 mix of Screamer Pink and Pink Horror, followed by further highlights of Pink Horror.

Tears in the flesh were painted with Blood Angels Red

Finally, any boils on the miniature were painted with Army Painter Red Wash.

The eye was also painted in with Blood Angels Red. When this was dry, the eye was painted in with Averland Sunset, leaving a red rim around the edge of the eyeball. This was then given a second coat of yellow using Yriel Yellow. Finally, the pupil was painted into the eye with Abaddon Black.

Horns

The Horns were given a base coat of Zandri Dust. When this was dry it was washed with Agrax Earthshade.

The horn was then highlighted by painting thin vertical lines of Karak Stone along the horn, leaving a very small quantity of the Agrax Earthshade visible at the base. This was then followed with thin vertical lines of Screaming Skull, leaving more of the base visible. Finally, thin vertical lines of Pallid Wych Flesh were applied to the top third of the horn.

The Metal (Plaguesword)

The sword blade was given a basecoat of Leadbelcher. When this was dry, it was first washed with Nuln Oil, and then with Agrax Earthshade.

Once dry, patches of watered down Skrag Brown were applied to the metal. Again, once dry, this was followed with smaller patches of Trollslayer Orange were applied. This was then followed by patches of Fire Dragon Orange. To finish the metal, I gave it a light dry brush on the edges with Leadbelcher.

Finish by basing as you desire.

I have really enjoyed using this guide over the years. it can be used to provide a range of tones with the Plaguebearer ranks without losing a uniform feel.
