End of 2023 hobby goals write up

2023 was a good year for my hobby and hobby goals. The year saw a shift from just painting miniatures back to me playing games and attending tournaments, an aspect of the hobby that I had really missed.

At the start of the year, I set the following goals:

  • Paint more miniatures in a month than are bought.
  • Buy no miniatures in a month.
  • Paint a Warhammer Underworlds warband.
  • Paint a kill team.
  • Paint a unit for one of my existing armies.
  • Paint one of each plane and ground defence for Aeronautica Imperialis.

As with 2022, my main aim in 2023 was to reduce my pile of shame and stop buying miniatures I was never going to paint.

Paint more miniatures in a month than are bought.

I managed to achieve this goal every month during 2023 except January. As a result, I bought a total of 59 miniatures and painted 122. I reduced my pile of shame by 63 miniatures, a very pleasing effort. In additon, this has saved me a substantial quantity of money.

Buy no miniatures in a month.

Early on in 2023, I decided to focus on Warhammer Underworlds. I came to this decision as I had not been able to play any large tabletop games for a long time. The few games I had managed recently had all been Underworlds, so it made sense to focus my attentions there. In additon, I had a large backlog of Underworld warbands to paint. In the end, I bought miniatures during five months of 2023. In these months, I was only getting the latest Underworlds releases.

Paint a Warhammer Underworlds warband

I am really pleased with my achievements within this goal. I finished the year having painted seventeen Underworlds warbands. With eight being released within a year, I have really made significant in-roads into my backlog. I managed to paint:

  1. Rippa Snarlfangs
  2. The Godsworn Hunt
  3. Grashrak's Despoilers
  4. Xandire's Truthseekers
  5. The Exiled Dead
  6. Domitan's Stormcoven
  7. The Headman's Curse
  8. Ephilim's Pandaemonium
  9. The Gnarlspirit Pack
  10. Gryselle's Arenai
  11. Grinkrak's Looncourt
  12. Hedkrakka's Madmob
  13. The Gorechosen of Dromm
  14. The Thircecursed Discord
  15. Hexbane's Hunters
  16. Skabbik's Plaguepack
  17. Blackpowder's Buccaneers
I completed all the warbands from Wrydhollow and Gnarlwood in the same year as release (an achievement for me!). Plus I have also now completed all the warbands for Shadespire, Nightvault and Beastgrave. Next year, I hope to finish all the remaining seasons: Direchasm, Harrowdeep, Nethermaze and Deathgorge, plus what ever they release next.

Paint a unit for an existing army

My focus really switched away from this goal very early on in 2023. I did do a little bit of rebasing on my Gloomspite Gitz and I painted up a unit of squigs. I also painted a unit of Myrmourn Banshees for my Nighthaunts, which also made for a better set of Lady Harrow's Mournflight, which I took to the Agents of Sigmar tournament in November. To go with the Banshees, I found five Dreadscythe Harridans in the loft, and painted these as well. Overall, the goal was achieved.

Paint a Kill Team

This was another goal I did not really focus on. I did manage to achieve it as back in February I painted up a set of Necrons. This is, however, not a game I have much interest in now, so it is unlikely to be a focus for the future. I think, I will need people in the local area playing this game before I come back for a second look, but I do have a stack of unpainted Necrons sitting in the loft.

Paint one of each plane and ground defence for Aeronautica Imperialis.

Finally, we get to Aeronautica. Unfortunately, Games Workshop decided to shelve this game during 2023 in favour of Legions Imperialis. With the miniatures no longer available and the game no longer being supported, I focus my attention elsewhere. I do need to think about how I might use my YouTube channel in the future.

For 2024, I intend to finish the year with all the Underworlds warbands painted. I also want to further reduce my pile of shame/potential further. However, the big focus for 2024, will be to start gaming on a more regular basis and attend a few more tournaments.  With all that said, Happy New Year, and maybe I will see some of you in person I  the near future. Bye for now.
