How I paint - Necrons - Tabletop standard

I started collecting my first Necron army, many years ago, way back in 2002. Since then, the faction has gone through many changes, with the introduction of many new miniatures. I have always painted my Necrons in the classic silver with green as the spot colour.

This is my take on a tabletop standard Necron Warrior. This scheme could easily be adapted for all the miniatures within the range.

Paints required:

  • Chaos Black spray
  • Leadbelcher spray
  • Abaddon Black
  • Nuln Oil
  • Leadbelcher
  • Ironbreaker
  • Stormhost Silver
  • Night Lords Blue
  • Kantor Blue
  • Alaitoc Guard Blue
  • Retributor Gold
  • Eshin Grey
  • Dawnstone
  • Caliban Green
  • Warpstone Green
  • Moot Green
  • White Scar
  • Tesseract Glow
  • Lahmian Medium
  • Balthasar Gold
  • Agrax Earthshade
  • Hashut Copper

I began by giving the miniature with a light undercoat of Chaos Black spray. The miniature was then given a spray basecoat of Leadbelcher. I used some putty to mask the gauss rifle before I sprayed the miniature with Leadbelcher.

The Leadbelcher was then washed with a 1:3 mix of Abaddon Black and Nuln Oil.

Once the wash was fully dry, the miniature was dry brushed with Leadbelcher, then with Ironbreaker and finally with Stormhost Silver.

The glyph on the chest was painted with Night Lords Blue. This was then highlighted with Kantor Blue and then an edge highlight of Alaitoc Guard Blue. The ankh on the chest glyph was picked out with Retributor Gold.

The gun was then given a basecoat of Abaddon Black. This was edge highlighted first with Eshin Grey and then with finer highlights of Dawnstone.

The cables on the gauss rifle were given a basecoat of Caliban Green. This was followed by a second basecoat of Warpstone Green. The cables were then highlighted with a 1:1 mix of Warpstone Green and Moot Green.

The nodes within the barrel of the gauss rifle were given a basecoat with Caliban Green and then with a second basecoat of Warpstone Green. The nodes were then highlighted with Moot Green followed by a mix of White Scar with a touch of Moot Green. The White Scar mix was diluted down with water. This was then used to edge highlight the gun barrel surrounding the nodes. The nodes were finished with a glaze of Tesseract Glow diluted with Lahmian Medium (1:4) was applied to the nodes and the surrounding gun barrel.

The energy coils on the gauss rifle (and any damage showing through the silver metal of the Necron Warrior) was given a basecoat of Balthasar Gold. This was then washed with Agrax Earthshade. When the wash was fully dry, the coils were highlighted with Hashut Copper.

The eyes of the Necron Warrior were picked out with Moot Green.

The base was covered in fine sand. This was painted black. When it was dry, the base was drybrushed with Mechanicum Standard Grey, then with Dawnstone. When this was dry the base was given a wash with Athonian Camoshade. The 'rocks' on the base were drybrushed with Dawnstone and then with Administratum Grey. The 'soil' on the base was drybrushed with Karak Stone and then lightly with Screaming Skull.

I normally paint my Necron Warriors in batches of five miniatures. I can usually finish five miniatures with a few hours. While each miniature is never going to win a painting competition, together they make a nice-looking army.
