How I paint - Legions Imperialis - Buildings

Over the past few years, I have been painting and playing Aeronautica Imperialis. It is one of my favourite games from Games Workshop. To play the low altitude version of the game, I needed some terrain. The Imperial Buildings from Adeptus Titanicus are perfect for this, as they are the correct scale. These building will also make for excellent ground targets.

Paints required:

  • Chaos Black spray
  • Mechanicum Standard Grey spray
  • Mechanicum Standard Grey
  • Dawnstone
  • Administratum Grey
  • Athonian Camoshade
  • Grey Seer
  • Balthasar Gold
  • Runelord Brass
  • Sotek Green
  • Temple Guard Blue
  • Leadbelcher
  • Mournfang Brown
  • Nuln Oil
  • Agrax Earthshade
  • Gryph-Charger Grey
  • Aethermatic Blue
  • Retributor Gold
  • Reikland Fleshshade

The miniature was first undercoated with Chaos Black spray. Then a light spray from above and slightly to the side was applied with Mechanicum Standard Grey spray.

After the undercoats were applied, the building was given a heavy dry brush of Mechanicum Standard Grey. This was followed by a drybrush of Dawnstone. The aim was to make most of the building grey, but without being a solid colour.

The building was then given a wash with Athonian Camoshade. One side of the building was washed and allowed to dry before a the next side was painted. The shade side of the building was keep horizontal as it dried.

Once the wash was fully dry, (I left it for a full hour) the stone work was dry brushed with Dawnstone. This was then followed with a dry brush of Administratum Grey. Finally, the stonework was given a light dry brush of Grey Seer.

The windows were painted in with water-down Grey Seer (this step got very tedious).

The windows were painted with Gryph-Charger Grey. To add some variety to the glass, some windows were painted with Aethermatic Blue. Try to keep the variety regular, these are Imperial Building.

The metal vents and pipes were painted with Leadbelcher. To the Leadbelcher, a small quantity of Mournfang Brown was added (not enough to obscure the silver colour of the Leadbelcher). The Mournfang Brown was added as it helps the Leadbelcher retain the wash in the next step. The metal of the vents, pipes and small doors was washed with Nuln Oil. When this was fully dry, the metal was washed with Agrax Earthshade

The large metal doors were painted with Balthasar Gold. The large metal doors were washed with Agrax Earthshade. The Imperial Eagle was painted with Retributor Gold. When this was dry, it was washed with Reikland Fleshshade.

The large metal door was dry brushed with Runelord Brass. When this was dry heavily watered down Sotek Green was applied to the metal. When this was dry,  heavily watered down Temple Guard Blue was applied to the recesses of the door.

Below the vents, thin trails of heavily watered down Death Korps Drab was applied to indicate moisture seeping down the walls.

This method works well on all sizes of building. If you have any thoughts or question, please drop them in the comments. Thank you for reading and Happy Hobbying.
